YouTube Lowers Eligibility Requirements for Partner Program; More Accessible for Smaller Creators

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) offers many benefits to creators, such as monetization, access to exclusive features, and support from YouTube. However, many Caribbean creators have been unable to participate in the YPP because their location was set to the Caribbean. YouTube has announced that the YPP is now available in more countries, including Jamaica and a few others. This means that some Caribbean creators can now monetize their videos and participate in the YPP.

In addition, YouTube has also updated the eligibility requirements for the YPP. These changes make it easier for smaller creators to join the YPP. But first, what is the YouTube Partner Program?

What is the YouTube Partner Program?

The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) is a program that allows eligible creators to earn money from their videos through ads, channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Channel Points. To be eligible for the YPP, creators should’ve been able to meet certain requirements, such as having at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in the past 12 months. The YPP offers a number of benefits to creators, including:

  • Monetization: Creators can start earning money from their videos through ads.

  • Access to exclusive features: YPP members get access to exclusive features, such as custom thumbnails, end screens, and live chat.

  • Support from YouTube: YPP members get support from YouTube's team of experts, who can help them grow their channel and reach more viewers.

If you are a creator who is interested in earning money from your videos, the YouTube Partner Program is a great way to do it.

YouTube Partner Program’s Updated Eligibility Requirements

YouTube has announced that it is lowering the eligibility requirements for the YouTube Partner Program, making it more accessible for smaller creators. Under the new eligibility policy, creators will now gain access to the YPP once they reach 500 subscribers. This is half the number that YouTube previously had. Other benchmarks are changing, too: participating creators will need 3,000 valid watch hours instead of 4,000, or 3 million Shorts views compared to the original 10 million.

The new eligibility requirements will start rolling out in the US, UK, Canada, South Korea, and Taiwan. YouTube says that it plans to roll out the changes to more countries in the coming months.

The changes are a significant step towards making the YPP more accessible to smaller creators. The previous requirements were seen as being too high for many creators, especially those who were just starting out. The new requirements will make it easier for these creators to start earning money from their videos.

The changes are also a sign that YouTube is committed to supporting smaller creators. In recent years, YouTube has made a number of changes to its platform to make it easier for smaller creators to succeed. These include the introduction of new monetization features, such as paid chat and tipping, and the launch of the YouTube Shorts app.

The changes to the YPP eligibility requirements are a positive step for smaller creators. They will make it easier for these creators to start earning money from their videos, and they will help to ensure that YouTube remains a platform where anyone can create and share their content.

Here are some additional details about the YouTube Partner Program:

  • Revenue share: Creators earn a share of the revenue generated from ads that are displayed on their videos. The share is typically 55% for the creator and 45% for YouTube.

  • Application process: The application process for the YPP is fairly straightforward. Creators simply need to submit an application form and provide some basic information about their channel.

If you're a smaller creator, we encourage you to take advantage of the new eligibility requirements and apply for the YouTube Partner Program. It's a great way to start earning money from your videos and build a successful YouTube channel. Check out our YouTube playlist where we find out more from Caribbean Content Creators.
