Is Google in Trouble in the Caribbean?

On July 25th, 2024, OpenAI – the producers of ChatGPT – announced that they were testing SearchGPT, a temporary prototype of new AI search features that give you fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources.  With Google.com being the most visited website in August 2024 in Trinidad & Tobago, is it possible that SearchGPT could take the top spot in the Caribbean? (Source).

SearchGPT's promise of its ability to quickly deliver relevant and up-to-date information could revolutionize access to knowledge in the Caribbean, particularly for students and researchers. Additionally, their promise to prioritize local content, SearchGPT can empower Caribbean creators to reach a wider audience and drive traffic to their websites.

As a thought experiment, we asked both Gemini* and ChatGPT** the following:

Given that Google has consistently ranked high among the most visited websites in the Caribbean, how do you predict SearchGPT would fare in the region as a search engine?

Gemini’s response:

Based on Google's dominance and the potential benefits of SearchGPT, it's reasonable to predict that SearchGPT could make a significant impact in the Caribbean search engine market. Gemini went on to list a number of factors that would support this prediction citing improved user experience, local relevance, language capabilities, partnership with local publishers and complementarity with Google. It also listed some of the challenges SearchGPT may consider such as user adoption, infrastructure and connectivity. Gemini concluded that while Google's dominance is significant, SearchGPT's unique features and potential benefits could make it a competitive player in the Caribbean search engine market.

ChatGPT’s response:

When predicting how SearchGPT might fare as a search engine in the Caribbean region, there are several factors to consider such as existing market dominance, local content and relevance, user experiences and features, marketing and adoption and privacy and trust. Ultimately, ChatGPT concluded, while Google’s established dominance makes it a tough competitor, SearchGPT could potentially carve out a niche in the Caribbean if it excels in providing localized, relevant content, superior user experience, and strong privacy features. However, significant effort and strategic planning would be required to make a substantial impact in the region.

According to Semrush, Google.com got 55.92 million visits in Jamaica in August 2024 cementing its place as the most visited website in the country. In the Caribbean, Google has a well-established presence and strong user preference due to its extensive index, fast and accurate search results, and integration with various services. Overcoming such dominance would be challenging for any new search engine, including SearchGPT.

On the other hand, while Google's current reign in the Caribbean search engine market seems secure, SearchGPT offers intriguing possibilities. Its focus on delivering relevant, up-to-date information and empowering local creators could significantly benefit the region, particularly in areas with limited resources.

Ultimately, SearchGPT's success hinges on overcoming user adoption hurdles, infrastructure limitations, and Google's entrenched position. If SearchGPT excels in areas Google currently lacks, it could become a strong competitor, particularly in fostering the Caribbean's digital landscape. However, significant effort and strategic planning are crucial for SearchGPT to make a substantial regional impact.

The battle for Caribbean search dominance has just begun. Whether SearchGPT becomes a revolutionary force or a niche player remains to be seen – and we’ll keep tracking the data to keep you updated.
